Liberty_BellThis month, Science Care opened up a new donor facility in the great state of Pennsylvania to help serve the surrounding medical community and to give more people the opportunity to become donors through Science Care. The 5,093 SF facility is located in the city of Philadelphia minutes away from the Philadelphia International airport on Bartram Avenue.

Philadelphia Facts

Do you know why Philadelphia is called the City of Brotherly Love?
.
William Penn named the city Philadelphia, which is Greek for brotherly love (from philos, "love" or "friendship", and adelphos, "brother"). As a Quaker, Penn had experienced religious persecution and wanted his colony to be a place where anyone could worship freely.
Philadelphia's nicknames include Philly, The City of Brotherly Love, The Birthplace of America, The City that Loves You Back, The City of Neighborhoods, The Quaker City, and The Cradle of Liberty.
  • The Declaration of Independence and US Constitution were drafted in Philadelphia and signed in the city's Independence Hall.
  • Philadelphia has the second largest Irish and Italian populations in the U.S.
  • More than 2,000 outdoor murals in the city have earned it the reputation of Mural Capital of the U.S.
  • The Philadelphia Zoo, which opened on July 1, 1874, is the nation's first zoo.
  • The nation's first daily newspaper, “The Philadelphia Packet and Daily Advertiser”, was founded in Philadelphia in 1784.
  • Pennsylvania Hospital, founded by Benjamin Franklin and Dr. Thomas Bond in 1751, is America's first hospital.
  • The University of Pennsylvania—the first U.S. university—opened the nation's first medical school in 1765.
  • The University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine is one of the top rated medical schools in the country.

"The services you provide are outstanding. I am signed up and looking forward to going to medical school. :) Kindness would be one of the words to describe the people who work for you and with you. From the person on the phone to the person who picked up my grandma. Our family was very pleased. Thank you again for such caring, respectful and personal service."

Worldwide Pain Management Made Possible Through the Use of Whole Body Donation

Dr__Ira_FoxPain is often referred to as the fifth vital sign, indicating that its assessment and management are critically important in patient care. Yet treatment of pain, especially chronic pain, has proven to be one of the most challenging areas of medicine.

According to Dr. Ira Fox, MD, DABPM, FIPP, ABIPP, the specialty of interventional pain management has really evolved over the last 20 to 25 years. In 1996, Dr. Fox decided to leave the operating room as an anesthesiologist and dedicate all of his time to treating those with chronic pain. He founded Anesthesia Pain Care Consultants in Florida... July 28th is World Hepatitis Day

World_Hepatitis_DayMore than 400 million people are living with Hepatitis B or C and each year, it is estimated that 1.4 million people die from the disease. Viral hepatitis can be prevented. It's up to all of us to act. In 2010 the World Health Organization made World Hepatitis Day one of only 4 official disease-specific world health days, to be celebrated each year on the 28th of July. Millions of people across the world now take part in World Hepatitis Day to not only raise awareness about viral hepatitis, but to call for better treatment access, better prevention programs and more government action as well.

Tips for a Healthier Summer summer_sizzle

In today’s busy world, when hunger strikes, many of us head straight to the nearest drive-through for a quick burger, fries and a soda. It’s convenient and relatively inexpensive (although prices continue to go up!) Then the guilt sets in a few hours later when you realize you’ve been living off a fast food menu way too much!

Of course there’s nothing wrong with splurging on a juicy cheeseburger or slice of your favorite pizza every now and then. Or maybe even a cold thick milk shake...it is summer after all! But if we all spent just an hour or so pre-planning and prepping our meals for the week, we’ll not only help to improve our health, but save money as well.

Here are some great resources we’ve found that can help get you started on the path to pre-planning you meals:

Enjoy!!

Notes From Readers - What's Your Motivation?

"I want to help doctors improve medicine, find cures and help patients live better lives. By donating my body, if I can make a difference in even one person's life, then it will have been worth it. I also considered doing this so that after my death my children are not left with the burden of what to do with my remains. I would like to think that something really good may come from donating my body to Science."– Eleanor from California

Elderly Abuse and Financial Frauds

The news reports it every day. Financial and other forms of violence directed toward the elderly. It’s hard to believe how much the elderly suffer at the hand of unethical people. In 2009, MetLife estimated the financial loss due to scams neared $2.9 billion. But in the latest Truelink study, it found the financial loss to be twelve times higher than that, approximately 36.9% of seniors are affected by financial abuse. Read more...

Senior Care Planning Saves Heartache

In 2010, a study sponsored by Genworth found that sixty-three percent of consumers believe they will not need senior care as they age. But a survey by the Inquiry reported seven out of ten Americans will require at least three years of care at some point after age 65. The data backs up the eventual need, but people still deny it.
